Summary

Sam and Elena discussed Madeline’s visit. Elena remarked on how rude Sam had been, and demanded to know why Madeline had come at all. Sam admitted she called Madeline, because Elena had “a lot on [her] mind” and she wanted to help “take care of this one thing” (114). Elena did not understand why Sam was ridiculing Madeline if she had contacted her because she trusted her opinion. She was also irritated that Sam had kept a secret from her and still saw the bear as dangerous.

Elena told Sam she thought the bear was magical, because he had come into their lives when he was not supposed to be there. Sam noticed Elena’s demeanor changing as she talked. She went on to insist that the bear was unlike other bears, as he did not behave how everyone said he should. Sam...
