Summary

Elena was not home when Sam returned from work. She called her and learned that Elena was out walking. Worried about the bear, Sam got upset. Elena insisted everything was fine and returned 15 minutes later. She told Sam she was not scared of the bear, and did not think he was threatening. Sam trusted Elena, realizing she “would take care of them” (62).

Sam wanted Elena to drive her to work in the morning so Elena could take the car and would not have to walk. Elena insisted she would get a ride with her coworker Kristine. On the drive, Sam imagined the bear in the woods.

Sam took her mom to the doctor on her day off. She did more surveys while waiting for the appointment to finish. Meanwhile, Sam remembered how beautiful their mom had been when they were growing up. She...
