Davey Beet's beanie is a symbol of closure. Ashley finds the hat his mother sewed for him hanging in a tree, which tells her that Davey Beet had been where she was. Ashley brings the hat back to Davey's parents to prove she found him and provide answers and closure for them.

The amputation is a symbol of determination. Ashley cuts off her own foot in order to increase her odds of survival.
