Summary

On “Day Three,” Ashley wakes up to find a possum chewing on her foot. To her horror, she does not feel any pain. She chases the possum off and examines her foot. She discovers that it smells horrible and has gone half dead. She realizes she is going to have to cut it off.

On “Day Four,” Ashley wakes up and bathes in a creek, but her foot is looking and smelling worse than ever. She starts looking for a piece of flint so she can cut her own foot off. She starts walking and finds Davey Beet’s beanie—the one his mom sewed for him—caught in a tree. Ashley remembers how when Davey first went missing, everyone thought that he had either gone into the woods to kill himself over his broken heart, or that he would be back...
