Apocalypse

The author uses this theme to demonstrate the cruelty of the factory farming industry and to suggest that humanity's selfish, callous treatment of other life forms and Earth itself will end in total disaster. Janey and Cleveland become radicalized by the things they witness on the egg farms while they are working as auditors, to the extent that they formulate the plan to remove one million hens from Happy Green Family Farm. The author describes the conditions on these farms bluntly. Janey sees Cleveland filming “hens with raw wounds, hens with prolapsed uteruses, hens dead in a bin in a bloody heap” (49). Bwwaauk's escape from the farm is described in harrowing detail, as the narrator notes that, normally when a hen falls through a broken cage, she falls into the cage directly below and is then immediately pecked to death by the animals in that cage...
