Janey Flores

Janey Flores is one of the novel's main characters. When the novel begins she is 15 years old and has just come to Iowa from her home in New York City to meet her father for the first time. A few weeks after her arrival, Janey's mother Olivia dies and her father is granted custody of her. Consumed by grief, Janey believes that she has made a tremendous mistake by coming to Iowa and fantasizes constantly about how her life might have been different if she had never left New York. Five years later, Janey meets Cleveland Smith when she is hired as an egg farm auditor by the USDA. When she and Cleveland begin removing hens from the farms where the conditions for the animals are substandard, Janey begins to feel happy and alive for the first time in years.
