Importance: Here, Anna is speaking to Emma about the pain and difficulties that her mother is facing; however, this quote is also apt for, and clearly directed at Emma as well. Emma clearly does not know when to ask for help, and Anna is soothingly attempting to convince her of this.

Importance: Being with Evan makes Emma realize just how much she loves him and just how much she needs him. Much of the novel focuses around Emma’s efforts to breathe freely, to breathe at all, especially given the nature of her near-death experience. For Emma to say that she needs Evan more than she needs to breathe is a revelation of such high magnitude that it is immeasurable.
