Abdel
Abdel's character is a symbol of the impossible. His entrance into Amy's life in "The Giant of Sarrià," is completely unlikely and unprecedented. His appearance also catalyzes another series of unbelievable happenings in Amy's life. Abdel's character also reawakens Amy to life's innumerable possibilities, however impossible they might appear.
Gold Ring
Amy's gold ring in "The Giant of Sarrià," symbolizes the past. When she realizes that she lost her ring in the mugging, Amy becomes emotional for the first time in the section. The ring was given to her by Pol years prior, and connects her to a phase of her life that has ended and is thus irretrievable. Losing the ring means letting go of an era Amy has not yet fully mourned.
