Summary

Part 5 is set on Labor Day weekend.

Chapter 24 is narrated with a focus on Lauren. The Labor Day Extravaganza, a talent show for the children, is dedicated to Susan. To avoid being part of the emotions, Lauren went to the bar where she was joined first by Robert and Jason, and then by Brian.

Brian talked about Susan’s death and also said he was surprised because the police had barely investigated it. Lauren was not sure what to say. She thought back to what had happened that night. When she and Jen found Sam and Jason arguing on the boardwalk, Lauren had become suddenly angry at Jason. She had screamed his name and then lunged at him.
