In Chapter 14, narrated with a focus on Rachel, Rachel and the rest of the town are preparing for the Bay Picnic.

Before the picnic, Rachel and Emily played a doubles match against Lauren and Jen. The match amused Rachel because she believed that she was the only one who knew Jen was having an affair. Emily angered Rachel when she suggested that Jen and Lauren should play together in the tournament.

Later, Rachel and Susan had a meeting about the tournament in Robert’s hut. Susan asked Rachel for information about some of the new players and their abilities. She also asked Rachel if she knew if Lauren and Robert were having an affair. Rachel was unaware of the relationship between the two.
