Summary
Part 2 of the novel is set on July 4.
In Chapter 7, narrated from the point of view of Lauren, Lauren had been spending her days practicing tennis and taking lessons from Robert. She remembered one in particular in which Robert was helping her fix her forehand grip when she had leaned against him and felt him get an erection. He had stepped away only because Susan Steinhagen, who oversaw the tennis program, was watching them. Lauren had never cheated on Jason, but she was obsessed with Robert.
Lauren’s thoughts about Robert were interrupted when Amelie came running to her mother, her expensive Pink Chicken flag dress covered in ketchup.
