New York City

The novel takes place in New York City in the year 1982. The story begins with Patrick Melrose arriving in New York City from England by airplane, and the story ends with Patrick beginning his return trip to England two days later. New York City is the most populous city in the United States. 1980s New York City was notorious for its high crime rate, although Patrick is generally insulated from violence due to his position of wealth and privilege.
