Summary
In "The Politics of Respectability," Gay writes that society holds "all people to unspoken rules about who and how they should be" (257). She references CNN anchor Don Lemon who encourages respectability politics by offering "five suggestions for the black community to overcome racism" (258). She rejects this theory as an oversimplification and argues that is is the responsibility of every citizen, regardless of ethnicity, to effect change.
