Chapter 10 - “Who is LTC Shoemaker?”:
In the aftermath of a conversation between Elizabeth and four-star general James Mattis, Lieutenant Colonel David Shoemaker meets with Elizabeth to discuss her idea of using Theranos technology and procedures on the battlefield, an idea that Mattis had enthusiastically embraced. Shoemaker, however, is less enthusiastic, particularly after two meetings in which an increasingly hostile Elizabeth repeatedly suggested that Theranos and its operations did not have to be regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Shoemaker does some research, and discovers that for a number of reasons, the exact opposite is true. His investigations inadvertently lead to Theranos’ lab being inspected, which in turn leads Elizabeth to fire off an angry letter to General Mattis, asking that the investigations be halted.
