Summary
About once a year, Stephanie would find herself working as a prostitute, mostly to alleviate financial constraint or the tedium of whatever job she was working at the time. While at a low-end brothel called "Christine's," she met Bernard, a married lawyer. Instead of spending time having sex, they talked about art, and another artist/prostitute he had met there. Stephanie revealed her desire to be a writer, and together they contemplated contemporary fiction. Stephanie also began to talk about her childhood. Throughout it all, he was reassuring, caressing her, until they quickly had sex towards the end of their time. She visited an art gallery with a friend, Sandra, finding that her own accomplishments pale in comparison to those of the other artists.
