Summary

Act Five, Scene One has no text, only stage directions. The music continues as Roy appears, “forlorn, alone” (56).

Meg appears, carrying the suitcases, and then helps Gwen with a load of other belongings. After Meg goes out with her load, Jim appears, carrying what seems to be the missing cardboard carton. He hands Gwen a parcel from inside the carton, which she opens to reveal a pair of slippers. She seems a bit emotional, and she and Jim embrace.

Coral appears, holding her hat upside down, and goes to Roy. She offers him her hat, and he takes it. She then takes out handfuls of shells from the hat, and runs them through her hands. Roy kisses them, then her hands.

By this time, Gwen and Jim have gone.

Meg comes in, picks up the carton, and goes.
