Point of View

The novel is narrated in the third-person, always from the perspective of Kyoshi, a young Avatar born on Kyoshi Island. The Avatar is an individual capable of mastering all four elements and their unique bending disciplines, learning how to fight using water, earth, fire, and air. The Avatar is also tasked with bringing balance to the world and preventing human and spirit conflict across the four nations: The Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, the Water Tribes, and the Air Nomads. Kyoshi is consumed by loneliness as she attempts to navigate the combination of being a young Avatar as the world falls into chaos. F.C. Yee does not place any limitations on the access to Kyoshi’s inner thoughts, allowing the reader to understand her true motivations, fears, and conflicts.
