Elaine Harrison is a sixteen-year-old junior who has moved to Annapolis, Maryland, for a year while her professor parents are on sabbatical. Elaine describes herself as tall and plain with dark hair, she doesn't believe she is anything remarkable. Ellie likes to run and has so far spent their summer in Annapolis floating in the pool of their rental house. Ellie's parents are quite eccentric and have named her after the ill fated heroine in Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem, the Lady of Shalott.
