Rome, 45 B.C. to A.D. 55

The home of the most powerful empire in the world, Rome is the novel’s primary setting. Most of the primary characters live and grow up in the city, while those who do not live there at least pass through at one point or another. Rome is at war with itself for much of the novel, but Octavius brings peace to the city for many years.

Pandateria, A.D. 4

Julia is exiled to this small island off the coast of Italy after she is found guilty of adultery. She lives there with her biological mother, Scribonia, in relative peace. Octavius catches sight of the island as he heads to Capri on his yacht.

Spain, 45 B.C.

Spain is where Octavius first meets his best friends while on a military campaign with Julius Caesar.
