August “Auggie” Pullman

August “Auggie” Pullman is a boy who appears as a character in all three of these stories. He is a character of focus because the narrators of the three stories describe how being around Auggie impacts their lives.

Auggie was born with severe craniofacial deformities. As a result, he has had many surgeries to correct the deformities. Regardless, he still does not look like other people. People are shocked by his appearance. Some children are afraid of him. Despite looking different, Auggie is of normal intelligence.

This novel focuses on Auggie’s fifth grade year at Beecher Prep because it is the first year that he has been able to attend school with other children. Years prior, he was homeschooled because of his many surgeries.
