Structure
Atlas of the Heart is comprised of 13 chapters divided into anywhere from three to eight sections. The title of each chapter describes the theme of the emotions contained therein. For instance, chapter 11’s title is “Places We Go When Life is Good,” and the emotional states described in the chapter sections include Joy, Happiness, Calm, Contentment, Gratitude, Relief, and Tranquility. Within the chapters are also photographs depicting, either literally or symbolically, the concepts described. For example, Chapter 1, entitled, “Places We Go When Things Are Uncertain or Too Much,” is prefaced by a photograph of a yellow street sign pointing in two different directions, a symbolic representation of confusion.
The text also includes an afterward entitled, “Cultivating Meaningful Connection,” an instruction manual that explains to the reader how to strengthen his or her relationships by helping give those around him or her “sustenance and strength” and the feeling...
