Summary

In Chapter 36, 11 days pass and Ellis and Hank have not returned. Maddie wonders if they've “run off together” and wonders what she'll do. She's certain Angus will allow her to remain at the inn and has to consciously avoid thinking about her feelings for Angus. Meg is recovering and asks for real food.

Willie the Postie arrives with a telegram. Anna is shocked and Willie hurries to say that it's not a notice about her brother's death. The telegram is for Maddie with news that her father has died. She goes for a walk and thinks about her life, including the lack of love between her and her father, and the same between her and Ellis. She walks to the loch and steps into the edge of the water.
