Summary

The children continued to play the card games with their animal identities. They began to scare each other by talking about spiders, and before long they realized that the adults were happy to leave the children alone. Not long after this realization, Lottie was frightened because she saw a bearded face staring at the children through the window from outside.

The face ended up being that of Jonathan Trout. He had stopped by to say hello to Linda, his sister-in-law. He laid down in the garden, talking to Linda. As they spoke, Linda considered how handsome he was, and she began to think about Jonathan’s personality. Linda compared him to her husband, Stanley, concluding that Stanley had more ambition, which is why Stanley was more successful. A short time later, Jonathan left, saying goodbye to Linda.
