Summary

Mrs. Harry Kember and Beryl began to change into their bathing suits, and Mrs. Kember was teasing Beryl as they did so. Beryl was timid, and trying to change without undressing too much, but Mrs. Kember was trying to encourage her not to be shy.

When they got in the water, Mrs. Kember was trying to convince Beryl that “pretty girls” (21) should be able to have a good time on their own, but Beryl was not receptive to her opinions. She kept thinking about the influence that Mrs. Kember’s husband had on Mrs. Kember whenever she spoke.
