Chapters 21-24 Summary
In chapter 21, Father sits down with Elvira and Lady Sedgwick. Father asks Elvira what happened and learns that she came to the hotel to get a room for the night because the fog was too thick for her to drive to Kent. Elvira parked her car and was walking to the hotel when someone fired a gun, the bullet passing close to her face. The commissionaire came over and pushed her behind him, taking the second bullet. Father asks Elvira then about a statement she made when Father first approached her about this being the second attempt on her life. Elvira tries not to answer the question at first, but finally tells a story of how someone sent chocolates to her room in Italy and how her favorite ones were apparently poisoned.
