Chapter 8 Summary
Ward Minogue tries to find Frank at Bobers' but finds Frank gone. He goes to the liquor store and steals a bottle of liquor since he doesn't have the money to buy liquor himself. Ward's father sees him, chases him, catches him hiding in an empty shed, fires a gun at him, and beats him senseless with a billy club, threatening his life if he shows up near the neighborhood again. Detective Minogue knows his son is guilty. Ward breaks into the liquor store and sits there drinking bottle after bottle, throwing them around. He sets the store afire and dies in the blaze before help can come. When Morris sees this situation, he blames himself because he has been bitter toward Karp's success. Karp shows up sometime later and offers to buy the store and the house. He can reestablish the liquor...
