Chapters 21 through 23 Summary
In chapter twenty-one, in Brussels, Rayford lets Hattie and Buck out. He and Buck argue briefly before Buck leaves the plane. Buck flies on to the gala and learns from Jacov that Chaim is in the hospital and has apparently suffered a stroke. Rayford talks with Leah by phone and Rayford tells her that he can't pick her up until Friday and says that she isn't to call on him until then. He doesn't explain why. At the site of the gala, Buck listens from the edge of the crowd and Eli and Moishe preach. Some in the crowd heed their words and become believers, but many more jeer at the two. Buck shoulders his way near the front and sits down to listen, despite warnings from the crowd that Eli and Moishe could set him on fire. It is the...
