Chapters 1 through 3 Summary
In chapter one, Rayford Steele is struggling with rage. He recounts his losses - his first wife and son taken in the Rapture and the death of his second wife. His daughter Chloe, grandson Kenny Bruce, and son-in-law Cameron "Buck" Williams are healthy and living in the safe house where Rayford lives with other members of the Tribulation Force, a group of Christians who work toward saving souls before Christ's final return. Also living at the safe house in Illinois is Hattie Durham, a non-believer, who tells Rayford that he doesn't give her credit for being able to carry out a plan to kill Nicolae Carpathia. Rayford prays that God will choose him to kill Carpathia.
