Section 2: Chapter 2 Summary
The Hossains are silent as they drive the last stretch toward Canada, sure they will be granted asylum. As they pass the sign announcing "Leaving the United States of America," Abba rubs his chest; leaving hurts because they were supposed to stay, become residents and be able to call America home. Reaching an officer, Abba explains his family is applying for asylum, but the officer says they are overwhelmed with immigrants and the Hossains must return to America. He warns them one of them will probably be arrested if their visas are not current, but if they can put together about $5000 for the bond, they can try to apply for asylum in Canada again in a few weeks. Driving back to America, the Hossains show their expired visas and are sent to a low building where they wait for hours until...
