Summary
Chapter 16 delves into Kate’s life in the past several years and explains why she turns to Anne Stanhope for help with Peter’s alcoholism. Kate tries to determine when Peter started drinking to excess, but finds she cannot. The couple had always ended their days with a drink or two. Kate is quite good at her job as a criminologist and considers herself a scientist. She believes she can solve Peter’s problem like she helps solve cases, but it does not prove to be that easy. Yet, in the beginning, she questioned whether Peter even had a problem because he was such a good father. But then, one night, Kate comes downstairs and finds Peter passed out and a bottle of red wine spilled all over the floor. Kate confronts Peter about his drinking, but he looks puzzled.
