Summary
Kate does well in high school and grows popular. She makes the junior varsity soccer team as a freshman and then the varsity team as a sophomore. The fall of her sophomore year, Eddie Marik, a senior, tells everyone he likes her. Before Kate really has a chance to decide she likes him back, he is hanging out at her locker and everyone at school assumes they are together. Eddie starts taking Kate on dates. They have a fight when Eddie asks Kate about what happened to her father and Peter, who he calls her boyfriend. “He was my best friend,” Kate responds (137). Kate decides she will never speak to Eddie again, but he brings her a vase of mums and apologizes. Inertia seems to push her forward with Eddie. They go to the holiday formal together and, afterward, Eddie takes Kate back...
