Summary
Chapter Two skips ahead to 1989 when Peter and Kate are in the 6th grade. A large snowstorm is moving into Gillam and so school is cancelled early. The kids race home to have a snowball war. Peter gets waylaid at his house, where he finds his mother in a bad mood. She asks him to finish cooking dinner. That morning, before Peter had left for school, his mother had asked him about a replica Sir Francis Drake miniature ship she had bought him for Christmas that cost $600. Peter and Kate, who has become his best friend, sent the ship sailing down a stream of meltwater in a gutter several weeks before.
