Tull - Chapter 36 Summary
The timeline of the story moves forward with Tull, sitting at home, and going to tell Cora the story of the wagon tipping over. Cora says that the log was the hand of God tipping the wagon, but Tull shows her that her idea is a contradiction in logic. Then the story moves back the wagon crossing the river.
The log strikes the wagon, knocking it partially off of the ford. While he drives the suddenly unbalanced load, Cash fights with the wagon, the coffin, and the current while he also tries to get everything stabilized. That is when things get out of hand. The mules kick loose, are caught in the current and killed in the water. Riding back to help, Jewel and his horse get mixed up in the mess, creating complete chaos in the river.
