Chapter 1 - Chapter 29 Summary

Chapter 1 - Friday begins just like any other day for Alex Halprin. He argues with his mother after school about going to visit his uncle and his family in Warren, Illinois. He doesn't want to go, and wants to stay at home in Cedar Falls, Iowa. When his family leaves, Alex envisions a weekend of gaming with his friends. He is a Tae Kwan Do expert. He plays World of Warcraft for three hours, and then hears a rumble in the distance, followed by the failure of power. An explosion rocks the house, sending Alex flying across his room. He becomes trapped between his desk and his bookcase, and feels something heating up. He manages to get outside, and runs into his neighbor, Darren, and his husband, Joe. Most of the neighborhood seems intact. Alex takes off running.
