Summary
In Chapter 28, Ruth and Isabel ducked into the woods where there was a sharp smell of death. They discovered an elderly black man, dead of smallpox, and buried him as best they could. As they walked further into the woods, the smell of death got stronger. In a clearing, they discovered the bodies of five people who had died of the smallpox. A young British soldier came up behind them ordering them to stay where they were. Isabel mentioned borrowing a shovel and he told them there were too many victims of smallpox to bury. He explained the British army had taken in hundreds of fugitives but had run them away when they started showing signs of disease.
