Summary

In Chapter 1, Isabel wanted to try to sneak closer to a milestone even though there were British officers taking a rest dangerously close to the marker. She and her friend, Curzon, could not go around the soldiers because they need the information on that marker that would tell them how close they were to Charleston and which direction they needed to travel. They had walked thousands of miles together over the past several years in order to locate Isabel’s sister, Ruth.

Isabel thought about how her friendship with Curzon, which had begun in 1776, had been destroyed because they had fought so terribly over his belief that he should enlist in the Patriot army again. He had agreed to stay with her only until they found Ruth. As sweat trickled down her scarred check, Isabel was surprised when Curzon wiped this sweat away...
