Chapters 5 and 6

In Chapter 5, Chase says he has been sent to take Ember to her mother’s trial in Chicago. Ms. Brock reluctantly signs her out for a one-night pass. After they are on the road, Chase reveals that he has gone AWOL and is taking Ember to meet a carrier – a rebel who will take her to a safe house in South Carolina, where her mother is also trying to get. Switching from an MM vehicle to an old truck Chase has hidden, they begin the journey, with Ember realizing that she, Chase and her mother will have to hide out forever. She also learns that various sections of the country are systematically being overhauled by officers who weed out Article violators, which is how she and her mother were caught.
