Chapter Three Summary

At the next town, Talia is astonished to find a female guard at the guard shelter. In Talia's Holding, women were forbidden to do anything other than domestic duties. She is further surprised to hear the female guard address the Companion as Rolan, the same name Talia felt to call him. The female guard discovers that Talia has been on the road for almost a week, and sends her to get a bath and some fresh clothes while the guard tends to Rolan and re-provisions the team for their journey.

The guard sends them back on the road, and Talia realizes she was still confused about what is happening to her. Obviously the guards in the villages were not as surprised to see her as she was to find herself in this position. There are customs and routines to be followed...
