Nigeria
The country of Nigeria, in West-Central Africa, is the novel's primary big-picture setting. At the time in which the narrative is set (the early 1900's), its indigenous citizens had been living under British colonial government for approximately a century.
Umuaro
Umuaro is a real-world community in Central Nigeria. The narrative defines its existence as having originated in the union of six villages several decades before the novel begins. The villages are still separate communities, but are governed by the authority of a central high-priest - the novel's protagonist, Ezeulu.
The British Compound
The British Government of the region in Nigeria that includes Umuaro and the home of the Okperi is a short day's journey from both communities. The white inhabitants of the compound set themselves apart, morally and spiritually and economically, from their black servants and from the communities they (the white authorities) govern.
