Summary
Chapter Sixteen. When Ezeulu is released, he and John Nwodika make their way back to Umuaro, not stopping or pausing when a pouring rain begins and turns the road to mud. Ezeulu becomes somewhat ill, but is quickly nursed back to health and begins receiving visitors, eager to welcome him back. Many celebrate his leadership, his courage, and his power, but some reveal their confusion with what he has done – speaking against the white man, sending Oduche to befriend the white man, supporting the white man, standing up to the white man. All this leads Ezuelu to consider how he is going to engage with his enemies in the village, and how many he actually has. Meanwhile, he tells Oduche to continue to investigate the white man, since he still feels it is important to know as much as possible about...
