Summary
Chapter Ten. Tony Clarke prepares to host Captain Winterbottom to dinner, worried about how it is going to go. He reflects on a conversation he had with John Wright, whom he had come to like and with whom he had shared some alcohol-fueled confidences about Winterbottom – about how his wife in England had left him, how he seemed to have something of a relationship with the female physician at the missionary hospital, how little work he seemed to do, and how he seemed to be disliked by his supervisors. All these thoughts are very much on his mind as dinner with Winterbottom proceeds well, following the correct order of how things are traditionally done in these situations: drinks, main course, dessert, more drinks, appropriate conversation. Clarke has a moment of worry when Winterbottom comments on an aspect of his report...
