Chapter 18 Summary

The weather continues to be bad for the Rangoon as she runs into a squall, which leaves her rolling and pitching on the ocean. Passepartout has become intolerant about any possible delay that stood in Fogg's way, even trying to help the crew when there is bad weather on the Rangoon. Passepartout exclaims, "We are not going" (103). He becomes more upset about the bad weather experienced during the journey on the Rangoon. She battles toward Hong Kong, but is delayed twenty-four hours due to the bad weather. As the pilot boards the Rangoon to steer her into the harbor, Fogg asks if the steamer has left for Yokohama already. Much to his surprise, the Carnatic has been delayed by repairs to her boiler and will not depart until tomorrow morning. This mechanical delay allows Fogg to carry out his business in Hong Kong...
