Crete

Crete is the island in Greece where Ariadne and Phaedra grow up. Their father, Minos, is the King of Crete. He, his wife and children, reside in the palace in the city of Knossos. Throughout Ariadne's and Phaedra's childhoods, they know little of the world beyond Crete. What they do know is the substance of myths about young men conquering the world.

Because Ariadne and Phaedra have no control over their lives, they decide to help Theseus escape the Minotaur and to flee Crete with them. This decision, they hope, will grant them some autonomy and freedom.

Ariadne leaves Crete with Theseus and never returns. Phaedra later leaves on a ship to Athens, where she spends the majority of her adult life after departing her home island.
