Summary

The Prologue takes place on a Saturday morning in the Sydney suburbs. Fires are burning in the bush and Sydney is suffering from a heat wave. The air is smoky. A man finds a discarded woman’s bike on the side of the road along with four green apples under a tree near the bike. It looks as if they fell out of the bike’s basket. The man takes the bike thinking that he has gotten lucky. He forgot that the previous day was Valentine’s Day and did not get his wife a present. He plans to give her the bike as a belated present. However, he dies in an automobile accident before he gets home. A truck collides with the man's car because the truck driver does not see a stop sign hidden by an overgrown tree and collides...
