Minneapolis, Modern Day
The majority of the novel is set in modern-day Minneapolis, Minnesota. The bustling city is described in juxtaposition to the traditional rural lands and lifestyles of the Native American people. This is where Klaus brings Sweetheart Calico, and where the rest of the modern-day characters live, with the exclusion of Giizis and Noodin, who live on a reservation in northern Minnesota.
The West, 1800s
Although the specific time and date are not stated, the events that occur in the first part of the novel are somewhere in the western United States, most likely in the late 1800s. This is where Scranton Roy kills the old Ojibwe woman and discovers his adopted daughter, Matilda. It is also where Blue Prairie Woman lives, and where she and Matilda are reconnected after being separated for years.
