P.B. Jones
P.B. Jones is the book's central character and narrator. It would, in all likelihood, be difficult to define him as a protagonist because although he does play a key role in many of the narratives, his function is more of an observer and storyteller, a listener and transcriber. There is very little sense that he is affected or transformed by any of the events he describes. Granted, in "Unspoiled Monsters" he and the narrative both display many of the characteristics that, if the novel was finished, might define him as a protagonist. He is clearly at the beginning of a journey of some sort, he clearly seems to be taking action and making choices to move him along that journey, and he has a goal that he wants that journey to achieve.
