Jones' narration suggests the next entry is being written almost a week after the previous one, and tells how he was summoned, on a miserable day, to a meeting with Miss Self. During the meeting, she reminds him of one of the agency's most important rules where there will be no socializing with clients outside of the business engagement. She then asks what passed between Jones and Appleton, and Jones admits that he was given a card, but lies and says he lost it. Miss Self then shows him a letter from Appleton requesting Jones' company at Appleton's country home over Thanksgiving weekend. Expressing surprise when Jones indicates he actually wants to go, Miss Self comments that while it is a breaking of the company's rules, the fee she will charge will make up for...
