Faith's children are now school age. The differences between Bonnie and Beau have continued and Faith is growing more concerned about Beau. Beau likes to play with dolls and he is being teased in school. Wade makes comments about Beau that cause Faith distress. Faith decides to start working with Beau, to try to rid him of the feminine features that cause him so much trouble. The following summer, Slip's brother comes to stay with her. Fred is emotionally disturbed by his experiences in Vietnam and this causes him to be difficult to live with. Fred was staying with his parents, but now at Slip's house he spends a great deal of his time either sleeping or drinking.
