Summary
In Chapter 40, Jessica sits on Pompano Beach as Skittles plays in the water. She has returned to her hometown. When she was twelve, Jessica’s mother had explained to her how lucky she was to be alive. She was preparing for an abortion when Don had convinced her to marry him. Even though her mother had been neglectful, Jessica had worshipped her until she had left Jessica with her aunt in order to keep a boyfriend who did not want children.
A lifeguard interrupts Jessica’s thoughts by telling her that dogs are not allowed on the beach. She leaves and walks toward the house where she grew up.
