Family
A family can be created with many different compositions and the author wants the reader to understand that the nuclear biological family being the norm is almost a thing of the past.
Kit's life started out different from the societal norm from the beginning. Born to a single mother and living in his grandparents' home until his mother became independent and moved out, Kit never really experienced the traditional nuclear family.
