A family can be created with many different compositions and the author wants the reader to understand that the nuclear biological family being the norm is almost a thing of the past.

Kit's life started out different from the societal norm from the beginning. Born to a single mother and living in his grandparents' home until his mother became independent and moved out, Kit never really experienced the traditional nuclear family. Whisked into Jasper's home after his mother marries, Kit is plunged into a new family dynamic that includes a stepfather and two stepbrothers.
